This helmet is not painted for use with a specific unit but instead was used for training new recruits. The M1917 helmets that did not meet the required ballistic standards for combat were rejected. Upon rejection, these helmets had a hole punched in the skirt and a red stripe approximately 1 inch in width was painted across the helmet. The paint is somewhat worn, and definitely shows use,
